Overview of higher education in Greece

Higher Education in Greece is divided into two categories : "Highest Educational Institutions (Universities)", and "Highest Technological Educational Institutions". To seek an admission to these higher education institutions, aspirants have to appear for a National Level Examination that typically takes place after they complete their third grade of Lykeio. Performance in the National Level Examination is the primary criterion to be offered an admission in these places.

An exception though is the Lottery System of admission to the Hellenic Open University for students over twenty-two years of age.

A typical undergraduate program in Greece is a 4-year degree program. Post graduate lasts 1 to 2 years and doctorates 3 to 6 years. The Greek Government presently recognizes only degree programs offered by state run universities.

  1. Agricultural University of Athens
    The University consists of seven faculties: Crop Science, Animal Science, Agricultural Biotechnology, Rural Economics & Development, Food Science & Technology, Natural Resources Management & Agricultural Engineering as well as a Science Faculty.

  2. Aristotele University of Thessaloniki
    Aristotle University is the largest university of Greece. Offers Philology, History and Archaeology, Pedagogy and Psychology, Psychology, English Language and Literature, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology and Computer Studies.

  3. Democritus University
    The Computer Center - Network Administration Center of D.U.Th is established in 1976 with the installation of the first computer system, UNIVAC 90/30 in Xanthi. The main goal of the Computer Center is to provide the academic community with the appropriate computer power in order to assist in the research procedure.

  4. Hellenic Army Academy
    The mission of the Academy is to provide the Army with Regular Officers of the Arms, the Technical, Supply, Transportation Corps as well as the Ordnance Corps. Education is available only in Greek.

    Offers Nuclear Technology, Technology of Nuclear Reactors, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Electrical Power Plants.

  10. Panteion University
    Offers courses through the following departments such as Political Science & History, International & European Studies, Public Administration, Sociology, Social Policy & Social Anthropology, Communication & Mass Media, Psychology and General Dept. of Law.

  11. Technical University of Crete - Chania
    Technical University of Crete comprises 5 academic engineering departments, the Department of Production Engineering and Management, the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering, the Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering, the Department of Environmental Engineering and the Department of Architectural Engineering, assisted in their curriculum by the Sciences Department.

  12. Technological Educational Institute of Heraklion
    The Computer Science Division (CS) is part of the Science Department of the School of Technological Applications.The teaching task of the CS Division involves teaching Computer Science courses to the other departments of TEI.

  15. Transportation Engineering Lab
    The Transport Engineering Laboratory (TEL) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) is a multidisciplinary research group that focus on transport related issues. The Laboratory aims at promoting applied research and new methodologies in the field of transport.

  16. National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
