Overview of College, University Education in France
Higher education in France is divided into grandes écoles and universities. Grandes écoles are more prestigious than universities and their selection procedure is highly competitive. They are the equivalent of the Ivy League in the US.
École Polytechnique is considered most prestigious among Engineering Schools and Hautes Études Commerciales (HEC Paris) is considered most prestigious among Business Schools.
Unlike in the US, in France a large share of the scientific research is done by research establishments such as CNRS or INSERM.
