The Republic of Ireland with a population of about 4.5 mn people is one of the world's most developed countries, ranking high in the Human Development Index, the Economist Intelligence Unit's quality-of-life index, and on the Global Peace Index. It ranks amongst the top 10 in each of these indices.
Those intending to pursue higher education in Ireland usually take the Leaving Certificate examination, which is the final examination in the secondary school system of Ireland. About 38 Higher Education Institutes and Universities award degrees at all levels and are recognized by the government.
